E' una squadra che ho iniziato a "studiare" da qualche giorno, essendo alla ricerca di un club di Conference da seguire. Facendo alcune ricerche sono capitato su un forum di cui si parlava di un'amicizia coi tifosi del Celtic, ma è una cosa da verificare dato che non ho trovato altro a riguardo sul web... Il Wrexham Football Club è una squadra di calcio gallese della città di Wrexham, che, tuttavia, milita nel campionato di calcio inglese, nella Conference National.

Storia:
Fondata il 28 settembre 1872 da membri del Wrexham Cricket Club, furono fra i promotori della riduzione del numero di giocatori per squadra in campo a 11 (a quei tempi il numero di giocatori non era ancora ben definito dal regolamento).
Nel 1878 vinsero la prima edizione della Coppa del Galles, bissando il successo nel 1883, anno in cui disputò anche la sua prima FA Cup. Tuttavia la partita inaugurale vide una sconfitta della squadra con problemi di ordine pubblico da parte degli spettatori presenti, che portarono alla squalifica della squadra e alla creazione di un nuovo club, il Wrexham Olympic, che tre anni dopo riprese il nome originale.
Nel 1890 partecipò per la prima volta alla Football Combination, campionato nel quale rimase fino al 1905, vincendo quattro volte (giocando per due stagioni nella Welsh League).
Nel 1905 ottenne l'ammissione al campionato di Birmingham e distretto, venendo infine ammesso alla Football League nel 1921. In questo periodo vinse 6 volte la Coppa di Galles, prima di essere ammesso alla Third Division.
Il miglior risultato fu quello del 1933, con un secondo posto in campionato, oltre al terzo posto nella prima stagione dopo la seconda guerra mondiale.
Nel 1958 vinse dopo 26 anni di nuovo la Coppa del Galles, ma due anni dopo, nel 1960, venne retrocesso in Fourth Division dopo quasi 40 anni in terza divisione. Nel 1966 arrivò ultimo nell'ultima divisione della Football League, tuttavia nel 1972, con la vittoria nella Coppa nazionale, esordì nelle competizioni europee nella Coppa delle Coppe.
Nel 1974 arrivò ai quarti di finale di FA Cup e due anni dopo allo stesso risultato in Coppa delle Coppe, eliminato solo dai successivi vincitori della competizione, l'Anderlecht.
A cavallo fra anni settanta e ottanta la squadra conobbe un periodo di splendore, con la vittoria della Coppa nazionale, i quarti di finale in FA Cup e la vittoria in Third Division, a cui seguirono quattro stagioni in Second Division.
Retrocesso poi per due anni consecutivi, la squadra si ritrovò in Fourth Division, restandoci fino al 1993. Nel 1992 realizzò una delle maggiori imprese in FA Cup da parte delle squadre di serie minori, eliminando i campioni d'Inghilterra dell'Arsenal.
Promossi in terza serie (allora ridenominata Second Division, dopo la creazione della Premier League), rimasero fino alla retrocessione in Football League 2 nel 2005.
Vinsero nel 1995 l'ultima Coppa del Galles a cui furono ammessi a partecipare (dal momento che da quell'edizione in poi la Federazione gallese decise di chiudere la competizione a quelle squadre che giocavano il campionato di calcio inglese), battendo una delle altre due grandi squadre gallesi, il Cardiff City.
Nel 2006, a causa dei problemi societari, la vecchia società del Wrexham Association Football Club è stata sostituita da quella con il nome attuale. Nella stagione 2007/2008 è finita ultima nella League 2, retrocedendo in Conference, dopo 87 anni consecutivi di militanza nelle categorie professionistiche inglesi. Nelle stagioni 2008-2009 e 2009-2010, disputate in Conference, la squadra ottiene due piazzamenti di centroclassifica, rispettivamente un decimo ed un undicesimo posto. Nel 2010-2011 si è invece classificata al quarto posto, venendo successivamente sconfitta dal Luton nella semifinale dei playoff (0-3 all'andata, 5-1 al ritorno).
Nel corso della stagione in corso (2011-2012) il Wrexham è stato nuovamente invitato a partecipare alla Coppa del Galles, partendo dal terzo turno, e venendo sorteggiato contro l'Airbus UK Broughton. Ma un errore nei calendari prevedeva che lo stesso giorno, il 3 Dicembre, la squadra avrebbe dovuto giocare in FA Cup contro il Brentford, squadra di League 1. Contro l'Airbus scese in campo quindi la squadra giovanile, che venne sconfitta, mentre la prima squadra passò a sorpresa il turno in FA Cup battendo il Brentford 1-0. Successivamente, il 7 Gennaio, il Wrexham è riuscito a bloccare sull'1-1 e costringere al replay in Galles il Brighton & Hove Albion, squadra che attualmente milita in Championship, rimanendo così l'unica squadra di non league ancora in corsa in FA Cup.
Giant Killings:
Il Wrexham ha sviluppato la reputazione di essere uno dei più grandi giant-killer nel calcio professionistico inglese. La più notevole di queste vittorie è stata quella per 1-0 contro i portoghesi del Porto al The Racecourse, con rete di Jim Steel, nella Coppa delle Coppe 1984-1985 (lo sconfitta per 4-3 al ritorno in Portogallo regalò addirittura il passaggio del turno). Il Racecourse Ground è uno stadio di Wrexham, nel Galles settentrionale.
Viene riconosciuto come più antico stadio per il calcio dal Guinness World Records. Qui gioca le sue partite casalinghe la squadra di calcio del Wrexham F.C. e la formazione di rugby dei Llanelli Scarlets.
Nella sua storia sono stati ospitati qui anche incontri di cricket, corse di cavalli ed affollati concerti pop. Al Racecourse Ground venne disputato anche il terzo incontro internazionale di calcio di sempre, fra Galles e Scozia.
Il Racecourse è anche il più grosso stadio del Galles settentrionale e talvolta viene usato dalla Football Association of Wales per organizzarvi le partite casalinghe della nazionale.

ottimo, una squadra che mi piace molto e che seguo con particolare simpatia. In questa stagione i gallesi hanno a lungo comandato la classifica di Conference, attualmente sono al secondo posto a -1 dal Fleetwood, ma con anche una partita in meno. . -

E' una squadra che ho iniziato a "studiare" da qualche giorno, essendo alla ricerca di un club di Non-League da seguire. Facendo alcune ricerche sono capitato su un forum di cui si parlava di un'amicizia coi tifosi del Celtic, ma è una cosa da verificare dato che non ho trovato altro a riguardo sul web...

Stadio davvero stupendo. A quanto so anche il Wrexham come il Wimbledon è seguito da un trust che ne gestisce le finanze dove a capo ci sono i tifosi stessi. . -

Copio direttamente dall'inglese, tanto è semplice e comprensibile. Breve storia del "Turf Hotel", lo storico (ha ben 150 anni di età ed è ancora in attività) pub adiancente al Racecourse Ground dove nel 1872 è stato fondato il Wrexham FC. Mi spiace non riuscire atrovare foto degli interni, ma sul web ho letto che è pieno di "memorabilia" della squadra. Nei giorni delle partite una pinta di birra costa solo 2 £. The Turf Hotel
Introduction:
Local historians are sure that most, if not every Wrexham fan reading this, who are over the age of 18, would have had at least one drink in the Turf Hotel over the years. For over a hundred years now, the Turf Hotel has become the meeting place on match days for some of Wrexham’s most inbred fans.
The most important fact about the Turf Hotel is that on 5 March 2007 it celebrated 130 years as being the oldest international football ground in the world. The first international on the Racecourse took place on that date in 1877 when Wales lost 2-0 to Scotland.
No other ground in the world has been an international venue as long as the Wrexham Racecourse, and yet another international is being held on the ground on 26 May, 2007. The first ever against New Zealand.
Turf Hotel, "packed out every matchday"
At one time the Turf was the subject of the quiz question; ‘Who is the only Football League Ground to have a pub on it?’ However, since the opening of the Pryce Griffiths stand in 1999, ensured that question is no longer relevant.
Situated on Mold Road, which is now regarded as the ‘Gateway into Wrexham’, the Turf has been situated in its present position long before the football club was actually founded.
History:
The local records are unclear, but it is believed that the ‘Turf Tavern’ was built between 1840 and 1844. It was first mentioned in the ‘North Wales Commercial’ (Business Directory) in 1844, and stated that the Landlord was a John Tench. The last North Wales Commercial before that was in 1840, and there was no mention of the Turf then.
The first race meeting at the Racecourse was on 29 September 1807, and later a Grandstand was built next to the Turf, which later became known as the Mold Road stand when the football club was up and running.
Known as the Turf Tavern, its name later changed to the Turf Hotel. This is believed to have happened when the original building was knocked down and replaced by the current building. Due to the lack of building records, there is no accurate date as to when the Turf Hotel replaced the Turf Tavern, but it is believed to have been rebuilt around the 1860s.
As well as horse racing, the Racecourse was also being used by this time by Wrexham Cricket Club, and it was from members of the Cricket Club that Wrexham Football Club was formed in 1872. Cricket Club members met at the Turf Hotel on 28 September 1872, for ‘the purpose of starting a football club for the ensuing season.’ This was to give them activities for the winter months.
Not long after, changing rooms were added next to the Turf for use by both cricketers and footballers. In fact the football pitch at this time lay from north to south, and so it remained until 1902, when it was changed to its present day situation of east to west.
By this time the Turf had become a focal point for the local community for the many sporting events, and with the growth of football in North Wales, the Racecourse became the home of Welsh football, with international games taking place there, as well as Welsh Cup finals.
The changing rooms were used right up until the late 1940s when new changing rooms were opened under the Plas Coch stand. The changing rooms adjacent to the Turf were situated upstairs, and the teams would climb down a wooden staircase and run out over planks onto the pitch. Also on the same floor were the club offices, which you could enter from Mold Road.
Sadly, part of the building adjoining the Turf, where the changing rooms and club office were situated, was demolished when the development of the Pryce Griffiths Stand took place.
The balcony, which is still situated on the back of the Turf, was the prominent place for the local gentry to watch the many sporting events taking place from there. There have been many other sporting events witnessed from the balcony, including cycling! In fact their once lay a cycling track around the pitch, whilst both boxing and wrestling has also taken place on the Racecourse.
In recent years the ground has played host for both Rugby League and Rugby Union World Cup games, while up to the late 1960s the Turf itself had its own bowling green situated where the pub car park is now.
Throughout all this time, the Turf has stood overlooking the Racecourse, witnessing many local and international sporting events. How this building is not already listed is beyond belief, yet you look into the town and see that the Seven Stars is a listed building; no disrespect to it, but a pub with far less history in the town of Wrexham, than the Turf Hotel.
